Becoming an IH teacher
International House was established in 1953 and currently has over 150 centres worldwide. We’d like to welcome you to our network as a language teacher. Whether you’re qualified or not, we offer opportunities to work with us; recruiting qualified native-speaker teachers is key to maintaining the high standards we offer our clients. There are opportunities to become a teacher through the IH Certificate in Teaching Languages to Adults – a qualification recognized by leading language schools worldwide, equivalent to the CELTA.
Working with us
International House Sofia recruits native-speaker teachers with CELTA or equivalent to enable students to learn in a ‘real English environment’. A CELTA or equivalent qualification means around 120 hours of input, with observed lessons through an externally accredited training institution such as International House, ARELS or the British Council. Our teachers usually have 2 years post CELTA experience in a range of levels and types of courses such as: Exam preparation, Business English, ESP and Young Learners. However, we also hire newly qualified teachers, offering support and development. Native speakers without a qualification can join our IHC courses and may apply for teaching positions with us upon completion of their certificate. Most importantly, we look for teachers who can engage their students and take a personal interest in the development of each individual. Self-confidence, a professional attitude, and broad interests are key.
Getting qualified with us
International House Offers the IHCTL (CELTA equivalent) language-teaching certificate, recognized worldwide. This program is open to all language teachers, including non-native speakers. Applicants must have a minimum of a CEF B2 level in English to follow the course. The course consists of 120 hours of input, 80 hours of homework and 8 observed lessons – with suggestions on ways to improve your lesson planning, classroom management, delivery and language analysis. Courses start in February and October every year and run for 16 weeks. The course is between 350 and 700 Euros. Please contact us for more details. You can find out more about the IHCTL / IHCo and other teacher training courses at our On Line Teacher Training Institute at www.ihonlinetraining.net.
